What is the best way to build a network from scratch in a new city?

My wife and I are soon leaving London, where we have been for 7-year now, to return to the USA and settle. I left the US as a marketeer but will return with an Engineering degree and a new career in Project Management but with no network.

Aside from joining the local PMI chapter and attending events, I'm keen to hear how others have build up a PM network from scratch without becoming 'over-bearing'.

Some...

(1) diffent type online forums (just as these), (not only PMI)
(2) local chapters / universities
(3) teaching (any kind) and taking clases/courses
(4) Pro-Bono activities
(5) Former contacts - friends of friends

I agree with George .... Socializing is the best you can do in such situations. It takes time to build a solid network. Good Luck

First thing first, you must have a goal, on what you want to achieve through networking.

Second, get associated with forums, chapters, etc. George already mentioned these.

Third, measure your progress & determine if you are getting what you planned & aimed for?

Join a local running club. Its just as much networking as it is running. Most of the group are not elite, just grown-ups trying to socialize with others with similar interests. I guarantee you'll meet some great people.

I support Anupam's advice

and add a quote by Jim Rohn:
'you are as good as the average of the 5 people you are with most'
- so do not aim low in terms of quality according to the goal you are pursuing.
And make sure you take care about your family too.

First, all the best for you!

I may add, that checking out some meetups near you - whether on professional subjects or leisure activities - helps to connect to locals. :)
You'll find them here http://www.meetup.com/
