Management is almost a science. It is about planning, building, and monitoring the business activities and functions.
Leadirship is almost an art and something that one has as a natural skill. It is about leading and motivating people (team members) to give their best proaductivity with their complete satisfaction.
I believe that one can study to be a manager, but it is very hard for one to study to be a leader.

Depends on whether you want to create new leaders or just add to your subordinate pool Whether you want people who facilitate others to find their own solutions or to tell others what to do, how to do it, when to do, where to do it, and how long to do it. Orgs that focus on creating value for customers also tend to focus on leadership over simple management.

A few synonyms for the words from ( I referenced Microsoft Word) make it clear what the roles are perceived as

Manager: Boss, administrator, supervisor,

Leader : Front runner, groundbreaker , spearhead

Leadership : Guidance , direction,

Managing: Handling, dealing

A company or departments within companies where some creative, research work is getting done, a leadership is more suitable. A company, department where continuous output needs to be delivered, even against all operational odds, a manager is more suitable.

However the two roles need not be mutually exclusive. A combination of two in varying degrees wherever an individual is performing role will always be a win-win-win for the company, the person himself/herself and the team.
