I want to extend to all a Happy Fathers Day weekend. I understand this is not a PM related question however, I am willing to bet most of us obtained our work ethic and direction to succeed from a parent.

This mentioned, what one attribute have you passed to a child/children while employed as a PM? In a Fathers Day ceremony at my 5 year old sons VPK program yesterday, he proclaimed to all, "My dad can build the best tree house because he is a Project Manager and knows how to get the right people"

Already he understands about Project Human Resource Management.

What a great story John! I am incorporating project management techniques into my household these days in order to keep things running! With multiple kids you have to!

Kristin, little moments like this are the rewards of being a parent. I also stated 20 years ago when a PM with Intel Corporation the best PMs are moms that juggle the daily family rituals. Sounds like you understand.

John,

What a great and very thoughtful question - I just love it ! I am not a father yet but I believe I will pass on to my future kids the good aspects of how to manage their life as life itself is a unique project you have to manage !

Happy Father's Day John.

Cheers,
RK

Rami,

Thank you for your kind words. Its imperative that we learn from our mistakes and provide proper study habits for children to learn. I truly believe PMs make for some of the best parents as we interact with so many people from across the world. In this, we are also able to pass along cultural beliefs and diversity. We live just two hours north of Orlando, FL and already just the word "Orlando" all readers know what this alludes too.

Thanks again,
John

Thank, George. I'm enjoying the stages of this project and take your best project you have ever managed, there is no comparison for what you receive from a child. I have always stated, "My son (Charlie) is the oxygen of my life".

Happy Father's Day. I realized over time that I learn a lot from my children on how to be a better manager, better leader, better person...

Samuel, you're a dynamic father as we can all read. Its amazing how a child redefines a persons life.

Enjoy your Fathers Day.

All I could recite below lines from William Wordsworth's poetical works. Though he was a poet, yet he exhibited great PM thoughts. Happy Father's Day!!

"MY heart leaps up when I behold
A rainbow in the sky:
So was it when my life began,
So is it now I am a man,
So be it when I shall grow old
Or let me die!
The child is father of the man:
And I could wish my days to be
Bound each to each by natural piety”

Anupam, I wish there where more like threads on this site now after reading your (others too) reply. It reminds me that we need to spend time with our families and not always engaged with PM activities. Thanks for the Wordsworth quote.

Great thought John!

In my experience, kids don't listen for what you say. They just try to do what you do. As a parent I would lead a diciplined life, setting an example to my kid.

Happy Fathers Day!

Best regards,
Karthik

Thanks, Karthik. it sounds like you don't have children (yet) and have a plan for when you do. From all parents I know, they all have a plan however this changes as there are no books, instructional aides unlike the realistic practical experience.
