Hi All, I know that there are lots of products/tools for Project Management. But the only tool I seem to come across is MS Project and its siblings Project Central/Project Server.
Does anybody know how much of the market is dominated by MS?
Why is it that there seems to be such a distance between the market leader and the rest Saving Changes...

Much depends on what exactly you need the tool FOR - and in particular - the size of the organization. MS has owned the desktop when it comes to project management software. I don't know what the metrics are today, but I wouldn't be surprised if they have 80-90% of the desktop when it comes to PM tools. However, if you are looking for large, enterprise-wide resource, project management and portfolio management, they really haven't competed at all (until recently) in that area. That market has been dominated by companies such as Primavera, PlanView, NIKU (ABT), Artemis, Pacific Edge and others. Saving Changes...

Fortunately, Michael's figures are much higher than reality.
MS France acknowledges 66% of all PM software being sold (SOLD does not mean USED).
Sciforma PS8 should have 20% and the left share goes to Primavera, OPX2, ...

Actually, there are several key stats to consider. Obviously HOW you want to use the tools, and WHY, are more important, than the actual tools.
-MS Project owns over 75% of the desktop project management tools space. That is, PMs that use PM tools to manage projects.
- The most widely-used PM tool in the world is Excel, in combo with Word, for those that are PMs that DON'T use PM tools. People want simplicity and ease of use. Don't underestimate this, which makes up a large segment of the true PM market.
- In the Enterprise PM space, Microsoft probably owns about 5-10% of that market to date (with Project Server). Leaders include Primavera, ABT(now Niku), Artemis, and Welcom. Fringe/Portfolio Mgmt (top down) tools include Pacific Edge, PM Office.
- It is important to note that most Enterprise tools allow users to build schedules in MSFT Project, and bring them into their scheduling/server systems.
If you are looking for tools with the largest 'ecosystem' of training, support, and knowledge bases, MSFT Project is a strong choice. Also, considering its ease of use and low cost, looking at what you want to do (requirements), and matching that to a tool, is the most important part of the process. Saving Changes...
