I was just asked a question that has been coming up for the last couple of years. Has the time come for program and project management certification in specialty tracks and or industries? Example CPM - Robotics or CPM - Information Technology or CPM - Healthcare. I thought this might be an interesting topic to bounce off of the PM members.
So what do you htink Saving Changes...

No. Not yet. Rather let the "specialty" come with the industry(ies) one find themselves undertaking projects management in. Some industries appear to have very few project undertakings in any considerable business period. One robotics related project in 10 years might call for redundancy of a "CPM-Robotics" certified project manager for more than ten years. Saving Changes...

Let's look at what happened with the PMBOK Extensions... anyone remembers them? They were discontinued years ago because there was no interest for "specialized" project management... So why would we hope that specialized certifications would have more supporters? Plus that a specialized certification needs to be based on a specialized body of knowledge (a.k.a. PMBOK Extension), which closes the loop. Saving Changes...

SO what if a professional association say in robotics, wanted to work together with PMI to create a specialty certification? That would be an interesting development and a big difference with what I remember of PMBOK. Saving Changes...
