I will ask about my personal experience. I was involved in this type of meetings in some companies where I worked on. While, because I am not a seller, I really hate that in advance I will say that when I was there I changed my perception and I will say that it worked and from that moment I allways be part of that and I allways ask for participation for people in my teams.

The project manager has to align the project with the business. So the PM must be aware of the organizations mission, goals and core values. Also the PM has to be in touch with other stakeholders, including business development.

The business development provides the direction for the on-going projects; further it provides timely information about future leads and opportunities.

From my experience, it helps business team and projects.
The PM gets to know about what is in the pipeline from the customer for whom the PM is already managing a project and, the PMcan fine tune the communications with the customer. The sales/business team gets an opportunity to understand from the PM about current status of the project and the customers concerns to make their best possible strategy to go about an opportunity.

I think it is essential that both stay in contact.
Business development should know what happening in current project, it should help in looking to use expertise and knowledge gain in project. PM is a crucial link.
PM knowledge of what is coming in the pipeline could facilitate development of needed ressource knowledge for futur project.

I think that projects managers must understood how the results of the project are part of the business, so it would be useful to attend these meetings. Also it could be useful for teambuilding between sales department and project development area, so the communication can be improved too.

Business development is a source (origin) for many projects. To manage these projects properly to achieve their goals, PMs should have meetings with business development to understand the reasons and the needs behind these projects.
