Hello Velazquez,
As communication is core success for any Project, it should be maintained throughout the process. I am glad to join Project management.com recently and it is good way to connect with the wide project community to share ideas and views. Back to your question: I personally prefer face to face meeting according to scale and nature of the project with its geographical boundaries. This kind of meeting gives you a clear idea without any communication barriers and misunderstanding about objectives and addition to that make you enough confident to solve the issues with clarification. I prefer face to face meeting but in this era where teams are globally distributed i think virtual meetings are becoming the trend and technological advances are easing this process.
But any given point of time face to face meetings are the best so whenever possible we should have face to face meetings rather than virtual meetings always. Saving Changes...
Cockburn contends that the most effective communication is person-to-person, face-to-face, particularly when enhanced by a shared modeling medium such as a whiteboard, flip chart, paper etc.
Virtual meetings, when necessary, should try to keep close to a face to face meeting, using video calls and shared screens for example. Saving Changes...

I am working with highly distributed, multicultural, multicountry teams from 25 years ago. People belongs to more than 65 countries around the world located inside the five continents. That implies to work with more than 250 individuals belonging to each "organizational pyramid" layer. And thanks God (or any other force of the universe you prefer) the programs/projects objectives are achieved. If you ask me, I only had a face-to-face meeting with no more than 20 of those people. In my opinion, if we do not understand that we need to work in No Face-to-Face environments it will be dificult to find a job as portfolio/program/project managers. Is the new reality (not much new indeed) and business environment. Saving Changes...

It is key to have a good understanding of the purpose of the meeting. In some occasions, virtual meeting will meet the needs, in some other cases a visit to customer's facilities might be needed. Ideally, the communications management plan shall include information about preferred communication channel. Saving Changes...

Indeed, virtual meetings are fine especially with the many tools available for virtual face-to-face i.e. Skype, Lync, and many more. Saving Changes...
It depend of the situation, when the team is already working well together a virtual meeting s acceptable and follows well, but when you are still getting things moving, getting to know each other a face to face is the best approach, specially because you will be able to fully communicate (using words, reading body language, emphasizing, etc). We have an Agile team that does daily scrum meetings, but some of the employees telecommute. They have used Skype with video cams so that you can approximate face to face meeting and they say it works ok. Of course, face to face is the ideal. Saving Changes...
