With all those balls in the air, focus areas, stakeholder interests and parameters to manage, a project manager must be an all-rounder and multi-talent.

A new factor in the equation is sustainability. Is this just another ball to keep in the air? Or core project DNA? And what is your role as project manager towards sustainability?

This research is centred around the question whether or not you (as a project manager) should bring this topic to the table? And what factors influence your decision to do so or not.

Please allow me 10 minutes of your time and fill out this online survey. Thank you in advance for your time and efforts.

Sustainability is very much dependent on the industry. For example, sustainability is getting to be very important in the construction industry, a little less in data centres and not at all in software development.

I suggest sustainability can be achieved if Quality constraint was managed appropriately. Your thought?

Thank you, Assadullah, for pointing that out. I checked on Wikipedia and saw that sustainability is now a quality dimension.

While I always seek to cross-reference Wikipedia information with other sources, I agree that it makes quality a much bigger, and more complex dimension.

Although I work primarily in the construction side of a national laboratory, where sustainability is very important, it is also VERY important in our data centers. Specifically, PUE Goals. Power usage effectiveness (PUE) is a measure of how efficiently a computer data center uses energy; specifically, how much energy is used by the computing equipment (in contrast to cooling and other overhead).

Would you say, Julia, that data centers' PUE goals are ecologically and/or financially motivated?

I worked on infrastructure projects, including HVAC, and must unfortunately say that sustainability was never the motivator for reducing energy usage.

The extend to which projects lend themselves for sustainable measures might play a role in the PM bringing it to the table. The survey includes a couple of questions along those lines.

If sustainability is now a quality constraint then the profession of quality management just got a huge upgrade in scope, complexity and responsibility :-)
