Project Leaders who become the CEO of the project demonstrate a level of ownership and personal responsibility that inspires the team and client towards project success. I wish I were at this webinar 10 years ago, when I was exactly in the same position of being "accidental" project manager. Anyway, it is never too late for learning!

QUESTION: Swapneel Rajani: What as a Project Manager should you do when other relevant stakeholders are more interested in delaying the Project due to their interest?
---------------------------
It can be difficult to get stakeholders re-aligned when you are already in a project. I try to prevent this from happening by establishing strong, trusted relationships up-front, so that in a kickoff meeting (or before) I know there is a shared definition of Project Success.

If it's crystal-clear that stakeholders cannot get on the same page, or are not going to get aligned, then I do not kickoff the project until we are. There's no point.

Now, that's not easy. It takes courage, it takes persistence, and it takes a willingness to navigate some difficult and ambiguous waters.

I decided at one point to never again subject my team, my colleagues, my partners to a project that was doomed to fail.

QUESTION: Tyler Harden: What about trauma? After working with a project co-manager who was angry, over bearing, and objectively abusive to the entire team, I've lost any desire to take a lead role.
--------------------------------------
This is a very understandable reaction, Tyler. There are undoubtedly toxic people in the workplace, unfortunately. For me, it goes back to building trusted relationships as early as possible, and ensuring that I create a safe environment for them to share with me what's happening to them on the inside.

With your co-manager, perhaps there was an opportunity to pull them aside, find out what fears, concerns, or trauma *they* were experiencing. Find a way to be empathetic. What's happening to them?

This does NOT always work. Some people have what's called an "amygdala hijack" where their reptilian brain takes over. No amount of skillful interaction on your part will make a difference at that time.

However, you're ALWAYS in control of your own attitudes, decisions, and choices. Focusing on the INDIVIDUAL row (the 2x2 grid we showed) is a good way to stay connected and grounded to what's within your control.

As with any traumatic event, finding a way to make it meaningful to you so that you can move past it is important. When I was diagnosed with a life-threatening cancer in 2009, it took a lot of effort, energy, and resilience to rebuild my physical, emotional, and mental confidence.

Viktor Frankl's book "Man's Search for Meaning" was instrumental for me during this time.
