“Be who you want to be, not what others want to see.”

Are you in the habit of proving yourself to everyone else? Will that earn you respect, goodwill and make you an idol?

So be it your experience, skills, expertise, association with organizations, etc.

I'd say 'be who you want to be' and not the other way around. You as a person know what you are, what your strengths and weaknesses are and what your vision is and you stay focused. When you have a clear goal in mind, you would more often than not achieve what you have set out for. However, if you have the habit of proving yourself to others, you run the risk of diluting your vision, focus, goals as your prime focus would be spent on pleasing others.

I don't feel that I have to prove myself to anyone. I know that I'm competent, ethical and honest.

Be confident, honest, hard working, ethical and a team player. Do those things and everyone will see how you are without having to prove yourself. In addition, you have to do these naturally and willingly without putting on a facade.
