The amount of time you one spends at work is another variable to try to optimize based on your objectives. If you objective is to go fast in your career you are likely going to have to spend more time on it, while if you prefer to spend more time on things outside work you are likely to slow down your progress. The important part when deciding this is to make sure that what you are doing produces the expected result and that it's leading you through the path you are trying to navigate.

It also depends on the nature of the organization you work for and the project demands... Gov't positions tend to favor work / life balance over private.
