Can anyone share some practical advice on managing your network here, on projectmanagement.com?
I'm interested in growing my network, but most social media platforms warn users not to connect with people they don't know. How safe is this network? What kind of information am I sharing if I connect with someone new? Saving Changes...

I do not know what is the common practice, but in my case I frequently add new contacts. Some members have over 20k + connections! Not sure about the benefits aside from feeling part of a community. I believe it that also contributes to the personal "score"

Thanks, Anupam. That is helpful.
I haven't decided how to use the Network feature here, yet. I'm hesitant to connect to people I don't know until I understand it better. I appreciate the information.

Wade,
When you connect with someone, you're not sharing any more information than users can already see by clicking on your name right now, which is simply whatever information you've decided to share in your profile.

Hi Wade, welcome! When I first joined, I considered the same, but at the end of the day, I was here to be part of a community. I want to build my network to see knowledge from other members and have more information in my Network News. This is a different type of platform from LinkedIn.

I chose to pursue as many connections as possible in this forum. This is a totally different approach than what I use on LinkedIn or Facebook.
My reasoning was that I wanted to influence, and be influenced by, as many project management professionals as possible. This community has a certain focus that other communities don't have.
There have been drawbacks to my decision: some people are here to phish. While this is annoying, I see it ultimately as a service to the community because I can report abusers.
It also highlights some interesting quirks. The check boxes to identify your interests are often misunderstood to mean you are offering those interests, for example jobs or contracts.

Thanks, Stéphane. It helps to see an acknowledgement of the risks. If others can manage the phishing, perhaps I can, too.

Just to put it in perspective, Wade, out of all my connections, I only had three that turned out to be scammers.

That's good to know.
Although it only takes one good scam artist to ruin a good thing.
