A Project Manager should be a continuous learner, dispite the different roles he/she has to carry on, having time for reading and learning about approaching technologies is a must.

Learning is a key to success in any field and the Project Management is not an exception. As a IT Project Manager it is crucial for me to study and implement things that can be benefitial for the certain project or organization. The PM world is changing faster than ever cause continuous improvements sometimes are not enough.

Learning new things and applying it situationally is also important.

Secondly, learning from past experience helps a lot.

Continuous improvement is my mantra running projects to improve quality, meet deliverables and not to mention adaptability to the change in business objectives. Choosing the right tools for collaboration and tracking progress. Study best practices and learn from earlier mistakes.

Learning is a key factor to keep us abrest ! hence getting us ready for the rapidely evolving trends and changes in the world at large. considering that every project is unique, enable most project managers to come out of a project more refined than when they got in. therefore our quest for continuous learning is very important.

Even if our Company does not promote the PMI PMP project management methodology and processes, I think we learn each day how to adapt, improve our soft skills, manage people, manage management and clarify to yourself in how deep politics do you want to enter or play.

Should a Project Manager get certified? Yes they should. And they should continue to learn by sharing experiences and networking among project management professionals in their local PMI Chapter. If you get your certification, you can advance your career by learning from experienced Project Managers in your industry.

Very much in agreement with your earlier post, "...It is not your SME's who will remind you of deadlines..." - and learned that the hard way.

Early in my PM career I experienced that on two occasions. On separate projects I had SMEs to whom I'd handed off a project phase to complete. I, wrongly, assumed they were keeping the external client on track with those sub-deadline -- since it was their own areas of expertise.

Only to discover in horror - 3 weeks from a significant milestone during an informal conversation with the SMEs - that, "Oh, BTW, the client still has not signed off yet on my sub-deadline".

I'd wanted to ask, "Why did you let the client keep making revisions?! Why didn't you let them know that would cause the schedule to be pushed out? Why didn't you confirm they'd received confirmation of their training dates?!"

I know - you're laughing, right? Why didn't ***I***?

For several hours I had to scramble, call in favors, and fast track in order to meet the client's original schedule that could not slip. Fortunately, everything ended well.

Lesson learned: "Everything is our domain because for everything we will be blamed!" =)

Learning Organization culture, emotional intelligence and politics is more important in communication management and project success, one have to go extra mile when developing team building relations. Also Market knowledge and analysis is key to understand your project goals.
