Any thoughts on good project management tools out there? Our PMO uses microsoft project and microsoft project central, however, has found these tools to be too complex. I am looking for a resource management tool that can house multiple projects. Any input would be appreciated.

Andrew, use Google's group search capability and search key words "Niku" and "Planview" and read new group messages. This will give you some insight into what folks are experiencing in the real world and you might even follow-up with an email to some of these people to get more input. I've never worked either of these 2 packages, but judging how companies that use them are so insistant on candidate PMs having previous experience using these packages, I can only conclude they are both difficult to learn and require extensive training to become proficient at using.

Andrew,
I have direct experience with the products on your short list.

For ease of use, functionality, and cost, my vote is with eProject (www.eproject.com). I purchased a hosted solution of their Version 4 product and had 25 people trained and productive before the end of the same day. Training was a 1/2 hour demo and the project managers were able to upload MS Project schedules, assign tasks, start gathering task feedback online, share documents (with check-in, check-out, and version control), manage issues and changes with full history, hold fully threaded discussions, and have common calendars for the project with the ability to link documents to discussions, issues, tasks, and appointments.

The newest version has mini-databases called Dynamic Apps that allows the PM to create information gathering solutions on the fly to solve needs. The screen used to gather information an even be posted to a website so the user doesn't have to have a license. Very easy, intuitive solution. I have used it for a number of customers and companies.

Hi,
I'm also in the process of evaluating and bringing in some PMO software packages for demo. Does anyone have any experience with or knowledge of Documentum's eRoom?

Thanks,
Debbie

Hi Debbie,
I am currently a user of Documentum's E-room and have been for over 6 months.
I also have used Niku for many years and I spent over a year evaluating PMO software from Niku, Evolve and Changepoint for a large organization.
Feel free to contact me for more information at [email protected]

I am in the implementation phase of a PMOffice rollout. It's a pretty good integrated PMIS.

Try

I agree that MS Project seemed to have a ways to go in integrating the pieces of the puzzle together (and finding someone to customize / configure the package to work as demonstrated seemed hard to me).

During one selection process I found Changepoint, Planview and Business Engine (mentioned) to be quality products but each comes from their own position of strength. So match your needs to the product's strength. A smaller vendor that seemed to have a good product was OpenAir.
Tom,

We've looked at several options from Niku, to eProject, and @task. The project management software from attask (www.attask.com), seems to meet the best of both worlds - simplicity and ease of use to enterprise integration and robust scheduling.

I would recommend the new version (4.0) of @task without any hesitation.

I am preparing to do an evaluation of Enterprise Project Management Tools for my Companies PMO. Does anyone have a RFI spreadsheet that they used that defines typical requirements for an EPM that they could share? Any Help would be greatly appreciated..
