I work as a Lecture at University, and in order to get students attention, I tell a very short story or a joke at the beginning of the presentation. If you tell a story, the audience will participate with you. A story or a humor is extremely powerful and is often used effectively. A good joke can loosen up your audience and make them more receptive to you as a person as well as to your message.

Good discussion, George!
As you and others mentoned here, it is very important to start impactfully to audience attention is grabbed.
I may start with a greeting, but will almost always have a provocative statement or question.
As a Quizmaster for a long time, I usually start with a topical and visual connect question. On many occasions, it may also be a crossword clue involving an anagram. The answer word would be very relevant to the topic of the presentaton.
I've got GREAT results with this approach. However, each presenter should ideally, over a period of time, develop his or her own style based on personal strengths.
