Is it just me, or are project ethics receiving an increased amount of attention by members of PMI? I post this question in light of the fact that ethics will receive considerable attention in San Diego in September by members of the Project Management Institute (PMI). Their Leadership Institute meetings will include a staffed Ethics Kiosk and an interactive Lego-based presentation titled "Think With Your Hands;" since a large number of attendees are anticipated for that presentation, it has been assigned one of the largest rooms. Their Global Congress event will also include a staffed ethics kiosk and a compelling presentation titled "Five Pitfalls of Social Media."

As a PM I think ethics is critical not only in a project but also with respect to one's personal brand. Ours is not a field of permanence but a constantly changing environment in which the need to drive profit is paramount. Even as we adjust skills, resources, and materials to meet challenges, our ethics must at all times remain firm. As mentioned in other comments, we are all seeing evidence of unethical behavior resulting in bad press and tarnishing brands. It is incumbent on the leadership of our organization to ensure its members are above reproach when it comes to ethics.

It has no sense. Take a look about what the definition of a formal profession demands. So, to have a certification, a code of conduct is needed. But in the case of PMI there is nothing to do regarding to legal issues. The code of conduct or ethics is an "ornament", no more than that. That is because project management is not a profession in the strict sense like medicine for example. Existing code of conduct for each country or organization prevails over the PMI code of conduct. On the other side, PMI as other organzations could work in trying to promote ethics but not more than that. If and only if each people understand that ethics is a topic that must be analyzed into a cultural context.

I partially disagree, PMI can revoque PMP certification if you break the code of Ethic/conduct, like profession can do.
Ethic is difficult and yes is different in each country, PMI should make it more than what it is in most country adding to the value of PMP.

As Project Managers we have a code of ethics that we need to adhere to. Sometimes the work environment comes into direct conflict with this to reduce the impact to the organizations bottomline. Ultimately companies want to make money as they have their investors and stakeholders to make happy, all other things are secondary. In an effort to turn this the ethics is on the rise and especially in a world of social media organizations can easily put on blast and potentially lose clients which directly impacts the bottom line.
