I am interested in getting into I/T project management, but being at a company with a very small I/T dept, I really don't know what the options are out there. As a rule of thumb, are there specific sub-sets for I/T project management (i.e.- application pm, networking pm, etc), or is it more of a free-for-all with a pm doing anything I/T related? If the former, could you please give me examples of the different I/T pm fields. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

In my experience, there are three primary areas of differentiation (which for small organizations could be combined). They are: -1- IT infrastructure management, which is the selection, implementation and daily operational management of hardware/software/networking assets. -2- Software development mangement, which of course involves the management of a software/product development. -3- Deployment management, delivering the software product to an internal or external customer.

Personally, I prefer software development... though deployment means working with customers, which is also rewarding. The IT infrastructure management role is very systems engineering centric. In my opinion, a good IT PM is someone with a solid technical background augmented with business and interpersonal communication skills. Expert knowledge of the business domain also helps... and the ability to work well under pressure!
