I recently gave a presentation on how Project Management works at NASA (where I grew up). I just touched on the highlights of how NASA manages projects.

If you’re curious, the well-documented project and program management handbook (http://go.nasa.gov/1QPkK8Z) can be downloaded. It tracks very closely with the PMBOK® guide.

One question at the end was: “How come you guys spent so much money when SpaceX can do it for next to nothing?” This is, of course, a popular misconception that I won’t dive into here.

My answer was: “It’s always difficult to be the first to do something and quoted Astronaut Mark Kelly: “Space is hard.”

Very interesting information. Yes doing anything first is always hard and there is always someone who comes in and takes your lessons and does it for less.

Tobe! You said it better than I did. For instance, how much did the first light bulb cost vs. what you can buy them for now?

THANK YOU!
