I'm giving a presentation on project planning and I'm looking for some project planning statistics, such as the percentage of projects that fail due to poor planning or how much time is spent on planning versus performing the work. Could someone provide a location on where I can find this type of data? I would really appreciate it.

Hi Jason, below is a link to IT Cortex and their Failure Rate Statistics page showing interesting stats from Robbins-Gioia, KPMG, OASIG, and others. http://www.it-cortex.com/Stat_Failure_Rate.htm Regards. -- Mark Perry, VP of Customer Care, BOT International

Hi Jason! I would also caution that it's difficult to put a percentage on how much time you should spend planning vs peforming. The definition of "project" itself tells us each project is "unique" in some way with it's own differences that will require an experienced PM to judge what the balance should be between process, planning, and performing. I did find this article I read a couple of months ago interesting on the topic in general though...

Good luck!
