Good and insightful presentation . Need to master all the leadership skills.
Thank you for your kind note, and for being an active participant in the webinar. It would be great if we could absorb all 50 skills all at once! :) However, I would suggest starting start with just one or 2. It's less overwhelming. I look forward to "seeing you" on a future webinar. Thanks again -- Connie Saving Changes...
Russell Rego: QUESTION-LS#17- How do you get Leaders to Listen, because in some cultures, it is all a 1 way flow. How do you change that?
Hi Russell -- thank you for the question. #17 is "Be visible and have presence." (just for my reference.)
You make an interesting point about communicating, listening and cultures. In my opinion (and I welcome the thoughts from others), you cannot change the culture. So you work with things that you can change -- like gaining trust, demonstrating credibility, achieving results, offering to help, DWYSYWD -- Do what you say you will do -- etc.
I also have used the book "Kiss, Bow and Shake Hands" -- which has provided me guidance in doing work in other countries and cultures. It might be something to check out.
There is no easy answer to your question. But I hope this one helps a little. If not, let's stay connected and I will try it again. Thanks for being on the webinar, and for your question. -- Connie Saving Changes...
Russell Rego: QUESTION: LS#20- Do Leaders really get into Negotiation? It is a good must have skill to have as a PM but as a Leader?
Hi Russell: #20 - Negotiate lasting solutions
Thanks for the question. I believe I answered it in the webinar, but just in case my response was not thorough, I wanted to follow-up here.
I do believe that there are situations where leaders "negotiate" -- however, it may be called something else. Influencing, persuading, convincing, etc. Whatever it is called, it has the same outcome -- reaching an agreement or compromise by discussing with others.
Sometimes I have seen leaders express their thoughts in such a way that it appears that the idea has come from the associate that they were talking with. It's an interesting skill to be able to do this.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you need something more or different. "See you" on the next webinar. -- Connie Saving Changes...
Abdelhafz Ali: QUESTION: When it comes to dealing with global project teams with such a diverse member base, different accents and levels of English language understanding. how can this tool kit be applied? As a PM, do I really have time to apply or try to apply most of these tools to ensure a seamless execution for my project? How do I got about it in such a setting?
Hi -- thank you for your question. Are you referring to a specific tool mentioned in the webinar, or the entire 50 Skills tool kit? Let me make an attempt to answer your question. If I miss the mark, please let me know and I will try it again.
The 50 Skills that were presented in the webinar are capabilities that we should think about as project managers. It is not intended that you will apply all 50 of them to yourself - or even try to share all 50 skills with your team.
If it was me, I would be looking at this list, and saying to myself: "Of all of these skills, which 2 or 3 are the most important for my team right now -- in order to achieve project results quicker, cheaper, better?" And try to introduce only those 2 skills in your team meetings.
Another approach is to announce to the team something like: "I have been exposed to some different leadership skills recently, and I am going to be trying them out in our team meetings and one-on-one conversations. Are you willing to learn with me, while I am learning?" This gets everyone understanding and hopefully supporting.
The key for me is -- what skills, if I applied them, could help accelerate getting the project done -- with better results, better communications, better team?
I would be using the Project Team Meeting - especially the kickoff meeting - to set the expectations about learning. For me as the project manager. And for each team member. And probably for the sponsor as well.
Apply the skills that fit for you (as an individual) or for your group (as a team). And put the others aside for now. They will be there when we need to tap into our PM Tool Kit on other projects. Hope this helps. Thanks for asking the question. And for others, please jump in and share your thoughts. Thanks. -- Connie Saving Changes...
