The Gantt chart will be as good as the inputs used to build it.
My recommendation before engaging in any Gantt chart is to create a project charter, and a work breakdown structure, with its activities. The activities will be based on the requirements you have collected previously.
Once you have this, you may start building a Gantt draft - i.e. allocate resources to each activity, duration, cost, etc.
To sum up, it is essential to have a rough approximation of a WBS, and project deliverables or milestones, before building a Gantt chart.

I am trying to make a 1-page project dashboard timeline. I intend to have several swimlanes for the various departments, and have high-level activities I need to represent.
I do not have the luxury of real-estate on my 1-page - therefor individual tasks need to be clustered together on the same line. Example: Requirements may be from Jan 1 thru Feb 1. Design may be Feb 1 thru March 15. I'd like to represent them on the same line.
does anyone have any templates that help with this? PPT/Visio/Excel/Etc.

You have your WBS so build out your project schedule outline in MS Project and create a draft gantt chart. You can probably google construction gantt chart to see an examples but you have enough to create your own draft. Saving Changes...
