Working on projects is never a trend because every project is unique and it is a different experience.

As per PMBOK - "A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result. The temporary nature of projects indicates that a project has a definite beginning and end. Temporary does not necessarily mean the duration of the project is short. It refers to the project’s engagement and its longevity."

The waiting time once the project is finished is the hardest.

Working in projects has been around as a formal career choice since the 1960's so I wouldn't say it was short lived as a trend!

As Anupam said - all projects have a set time frame so it will always come to a (short) end. I think that Projects are going to be around for a very long time but how we work will need to change and adapt to the world that we are living in and the technological developments.

In your daily live you are in projects. Perhaps you are not aware on that.
