1) Read the PMBOK
2) Read "PMP Exam Prep, Eighth Edition - by Rita Mulcahy"
3) Purchase the "PM FASTrack Exam Simulation Software for the PMP Exam"
4) Purchase the Gold package from PMstudy.com

It is a detailed article that provides reasons/advantages of taking a paid online test. Having said that, the objective of a PMP aspirant is not to do paid and/or free test. The objective of an aspirant is to pass the exam.
So, I have written a 2 part article that discusses about PMP prep strategy. The articles describes what PMI expects and how an aspirant can determine if she/he is ready for the PMP exam or not.
After reading these article one would realize free/paid debate is not good. Both type of tests have their own purpose. One should start with some reliable free tests before going to paid tests.
Lastly, one should invest in a good exam simulator towards the end of your preparation. I have written an article to do a detailed comparison of 6 popular PMP exam simulators. The comparison includes Rita's simulator also. It is my third choice among the popular simulators. The reasons are clearly mentioned in the article - Best PMP Exam Simulator ( http://www.pmbypm.com/best-pmp-exam-simulator/ )
As stated above the objective is to pass the PMP exam. PMP Exam is a costly affair and one should invest (time & money) in proper study material to increase the chances of success.
If your concepts are clear, I don't see any issues in attempting free mock questions. It will only give you the idea how well prepared you are for the exam. You have nothing to lose.
Oliver Lehmann's free questions are the most recommended, and attempted.
Paid tests are expensive, available for limited time, and should be attempted 5-10 days before exam. Think smart, think twice before investing.
Most recommended –
1. PM FASTrack® Software - Version 8. Aligned with the PMBOK® Guide, Fifth Edition. Developed by Rita Mulcahy. $299

In general, there is no problem to use free available material for PMP exam preparation, BUT you have to assure that the sources where the material is come from are reliable and serious ... and that is often not so easy to find such sources with free material.
Here are already announced some of them; just some additions from my side.
There is another point what have to been take in consideration while using free sample questions and therefore i would strongly recommend to read this article:
To help with finding some reliable sources for free material i would also refer the following guide, which contains the 10 best and most popular sources for such free material:
and finally i would ALWAYS HIGHLY recommend any PMP aspirant to use a professional online exam simulator!
There are options starting with 49$ and this should suite to any PMP aspirants budget at least, i guess.

Discussions are amazing!
First of all, we have to take in mind that not all who belong to this community may have the budget for paying resources.
That is why; from my point of view, we should recommend the free test only under the following conditions.
- Not suitable for people who have only led small projects.
- The free test can contain errors. (Agree Rami, I found more than one)
- The free test usually doesn’t contain situational questions, as you will see on the exam.
Benefits of free mock test.
- Free
- Convenient for test what are your weakness KA
- Easy way to check timings answering questions.
What do you think?
Like this we can recomend both but adding our considerations.
Maria,
Now that you are being more specific, I tend to agree with your rationale. How this gives more advise to new practitioners on how to utilize free mock-up exams. Saving Changes...

Excellent input . I have target to attempt the exam in Oct month.
So far I have completed my 35 hrs. class with PMI Mumbai chapter and now doing my own study to prepare myself by using Rita Mulchay book .
My idea is to first understand the PMI way of project management concept thoroughly and then attempt for exam because I feel that is more important than getting certification .
would like to receive your expert advice on my view. Saving Changes...
