Importance of planning in project management

I am studying MBA in Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University in Georgia.

I am writing thesis about importance of planning in project management.

For my thesis I need some examples about real projects which were successful or failure because of good or bad planning.

First time I consider that the planning is important starting step, that when I was in the university, one example was for the equipment arrange and plan for excavation and backfilling project
it covered b examples of the machinery work with or without planning and work schedule

Second time for real importance was from German professor came and give idea in Damascus university for one project for multi story building and how they spent three years for planning and technical study which cause to new technical proposal to improve the execution the next steps, this period give success in execution for 45 floors in six months
