PMI’s 2016 Pulse of the Profession points to a disturbing trend: Overall, project outcomes are declining! To improve project performance, project professionals at all levels must shift the thinking on project management…and elevate its importance.

PMI wants to know: How do you promote the value of project management within your organization? Your answer could be featured in our upcoming Pulse practitioner guide!

Data, data, and more data. A PMO and any PM are required to be their own cheerleaders. They must advertise their victories and make public corrections when there is a defeat. All of this requires that you can point to accurate data that shows the benefits of the PM or the PMO in the equation. If you can show actual cost savings, or time savings then your job is easy. Defending the practice anecdotally is a losing battle.

By showing to each stakeholder that they will be more rich by using project management practices than without using it. And rich does not means more money only.

I personally promote the value of Project Management within my organization by showing and comparing results of projects that followed PM practices and others that did not. Definitely there was great added value on projects where PM practices were properly used. This added value was reflected in cost savings, more customer satisfaction, time saving and many other factors.

In our organization we implemented PMO only targeting a specific department since others were a bit reluctant. Over a year everyone realized that the Department where good PM practices were followed started producing more value. They started looking good with the higher management because everything was always traceable and promptly available for review. There was no mad rush to generate ad-hoc reports.
This positive had a cascading effect on other departments which requested guidance for Project Management.
Point here is put the results in the wild for everyone to see. There is no denial good PM practices always gives you the best possible outcome !

In Construction area and consultancy projects the best practices of project management are discussed during my interaction with professionals of the organization and other stakeholders. The importance of project management skills and how it will help in improving the project outcome are mostly discussed with them with case studies and examples from projects executed . The application of knowledge areas in day to day activities, development of templates for lessons learned records, engagement of stakeholders , improving and risk assessment at each stage with mitigation plan wand improving communication skills are the need of the hour and I am educating young professionals in this direction and thus by promoting the value of project management in construction projects.

Project Management is promoted by demonstrating added value and successful achievements in running complex/strategic projects. Also it is important to give visibility and to communicate widely within the organization.

To be valued, our activities have to be known and respected. The general public is, however, largely unaware that project management exists. It's important to raise awareness of project management as a profession.

Use statistic, but remember that anecdotes have more persuasive power. Every Project Manager needs to be prepared to describe (in an interesting way - the difficult part) how they add value not only to the organization, but also to our wider society. As a new profession, we can’t afford to be shy.

Celebrate your successes: Prepare a presentation and “socialize” it. Identify key meetings where it can be presented. And post the presentation on the organization website. Keep waving it in their noses.
