Hi all, I just picked up a project temporarily to sort out, which is a long way behind schedule. I'm surprised to discover that there aren't any project teams meetings, and never have been. Not conference calls, webexes or anything. Has anyone ever seen a project run like this? I've never seen a project run without them.

Previous PM is not around to ask why.

Meanwhile, it's first team meeting (10 months in) is now today!

I would be tempted to have a brief conversation with the key team members individually if possible prior to the "first" meeting to find out their feelings. Best of luck!

Thanks all. The first team meeting went well- everyone seemed genuinely pleased it had happened. I decided to focus more on the current situation and where we are going, rather than have an inquest into the past. Only real disappointment is one workstream that is a key dependency for other ones could have moved forward ages ago but had not done anything for 6 months, just because they had not been contacted by the PM at all and didn't seem to know they were a dependency.

Weekly meetings are booked for the future.

I've seen a lot of PMs fall into the trap of using large team meetings and action item lists to manage the project rather than having and managing a schedule and having project management processes that pull in the right people at the right time. Not everyone needs to be involved in everything. Meetings should ideally be used strategically and not be meetings for the sake of meetings. Of course you can also go to the other extreme and never communicate. A healthy balance is key.

One way to assess whether a project has been properly managed is when the project is handed over to a new PM. In the case you presented, it is quite clear that the project was far from being adequately managed. Good luck getting it back on track!

Good luck on the project.
Regular meeting is important to a good communication with key team members.
You seem to have put that part back on track.
