Concept of PMBOK are fully applied on automation industries but all concept are not applied on all project. In your case if methodologies are pre-defined and assuming they won’t change at all, then scheduling, quality control, resource estimation, EVM and many more tools and techniques are applied on your kind of environment. In automation industry if you are executing a turnkey project then variation is equivalent of change. If there is any additional requirement from client above contractual scope then change management is fully applied on your project. All variations must be fully analyzed for impact on time, cost and quality and after approval from proper stakeholder as defined in your project management plant must be implemented. Automation is an ideal domain where concept of PMBOK can deliver huge value because these projects are technically & technologically very complex, involve changing technologies and coordination among technologies from entirely different domain, coordination among wide range of stakeholders( governments, OEM’s, Sub contractors & Suppliers), global multicultural dealings, very critical in nature, high time pressure etc. Think of implementation of automation systems in a green field steel, cement, oil or power industry and link PMBOK with it.
