Hello PM network -- I teach project management in our community college, and am looking for some scenario's of short PM situations or projects where a "story" or situation is given and students need to figure out what they should do as the Project Manager or Team Member.

The project situations could involve handling risk, or scope creep, or over budget - any project problem.

Does anyone have some short examples that I could use as a teaching tool? Thanks much -- Connie

Connie, if you do a search for "GAO best practices assessment guide", they have a number of these for cost, schedule etc. Although interesting to read anyway, browse for the case studies that are highlighted. These may give you some ideas for failed projects and in many cases, indicate what was done to mitigate.

If you want a simple real world scenario, I was tasked to deploy a video conferencing system to a local city. Just prior to executing the pilot I was told a second city would be joining the project but the schedule and cost to my client could not change. The scope more than doubled as they added interoperability between the cities.

Hi Connie -

Other places you can check prmiteach.org It's the educational branch of PMI. You can register for free on the site. There are some great resources there. I also teach PM to undergrads so I'm constantly looking for good case studies and other resources.

My team and I have a number of "what if" scenario-type questions we use when interviewing PM candidates. Please email me privately and I can send you some of these.
