Hello PM network -- I teach project management in our community college, and am looking for some scenario's of short PM situations or projects where a "story" or situation is given and students need to figure out what they should do as the Project Manager or Team Member.
The project situations could involve handling risk, or scope creep, or over budget - any project problem.
Does anyone have some short examples that I could use as a teaching tool? Thanks much -- Connie Saving Changes...
Depending on the involvement of the students or interest maybe you can also use examples as real failure projects as the launch of last Samsung mobile, or VW case. They can read the business case, the news, and think about what they will do in this situation as a mangers, team workers.

Maria - I like this idea of using "things in the news" - which (hopefully) the students will relate to. Putting the students in the perspective of "what would you do?" is my focus. And hopefully, they would have learned some key learnings from me on the right response(s). :) Thanks again. Terrific idea. -- Connie
Julia -- thanks for the idea to use our "surroundings" in the Pacific Northwest. We have a # of things to consider -- including way too much rain! :) Good idea. I'm sure that I can use this somehow. Thanks for taking the time to jump into this topic. I appreciate everyone's insights. -- Connie Saving Changes...

I can think of 'Emergency Preparedness', and 'Business Continuity'. These involve real life situations.

Anupam - Thanks for the additional ideas. These are excellent for relating to real-world experiences. I will put them in my idea bank! Thanks again for your suggestions. -- Connie

If you're willing to plow through it and large projects are appropriate for your class, the US government provides online access to project information.

Nancy, do you have more information about it? Could you share a link? As far as I know the US government have a lot of statistic information, but I've never read before about project information. Thank you,

go to usa.gov, enter project information in search. It's a journey to find something useful. If you are aware of a project that you think everyone would know, you can search specifically for that project.

The Car Race Championship can be a good concept to teach the basics in Project Management. You need to manage with a Sponsor, to set up a winning team, to invest in the right material (car, engine, tyres, oils, ...), to plan how you target your different races and of course, if you do not succeed at the end of one race, what changes do you have to manage to prepare the next one for success. Hi Connie, National Geographic has this program called "Doomsday Preppers" and it shows how people are preparing for various doomsday scenarios. Many of these folks have a very careful plan for how they will handle their doomsday scenario, but with at least one or two overwhelming project plan flaws. The people are basically project planning but missing that overwhelming flaw in their plan. This might be a funny idea to show your class.
