Hello,
Would you have any best practice to share on how to assign unique identifiers (Tasks IDs) to projects tasks in an Excel Gantt chart ?
I am typically looking for a flexible Task ID structure that would enable me later in the project to insert tasks in the Gantt which were not identified during initial WBS.
Task Numbers are dynamic. The unique id gets changed if an existing task is deleted or moved or new task added.
To show this - right click on the column heading and select insert column. From the column definition pop up, select unique id from field name drop down. Saving Changes...

Thank you Anupam for your Excel tip here.
I realize I have not formulated my questions correctly. My question is actually not about how to make sure my task identifiers are unique but rather about what are the best practices for logic (non sequential) task numbering.
How to number tasks so they fall under their "parent" hammock activity and enable to insert new tasks between existing ones.
For example :
Task 3.1. "Send Request for Information"
Task 3.2. "Send Request for Quotation"
Then PM is told by procurement he should also "Send a Request for Proposal" between these 2 tasks.
Ideally, I would re-number tasks as follows :
Task 3.1. "Send Request for Information"
Task 3.2. "Send Request for Proposal"
Task 3.3. "Send Request for Quotation"
... but then I am changing the task associated to 3.2. and 3.3. which I would like to avoid.

Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movements of small green pieces of paper, which is odd because on the whole it wasn't the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy."
