We all want to succeed but sometimes it´s not clear since we try to avoid making mistakes and that very often means not succeeding.

I appreciate your comments

My objective, as project manager, is to achieve the project objectives.

My primary objective is to achieve the goal of the project by completing it on time, and under budget, meeting the requirements for what it was undertaken, keeping customers and team members happy.

Thank you. Now imagine that the project evolves into a scenario where failure is highly possible. Do you still focus your efforts in succeeding or the fear of failure forces you to change your primary objective in favor of avoiding making a mistake?

Why project fails? Is it unclear scope, lack of stakeholder engagement & buy-in, lack of change management skills, budget & schedule, resources or some other reason?

The primary objective is still achieving the goal, enforcing preventive measures.

First of all, we need to define "failure". Is it lack of success? Is it cessation of functioning? After we avoid ambiguity then we can work on it. The key question is: why organizations are hiring a project manager? Because she/he will assure that the process to create the solution will run as expected. How the project manager will do that? Because she/he will demonstrate that she/he is in control. So, what you state, is about lack of control.

Interesting question. as project manager you always should pursue project success based on triple restriccion...nevertheless our brain seek to avoid the loss is an unconscious defense mechanism so we must impose the rational brain and find success despite loss.

Absolutely. Leadership starts in thyself. We should be more rational than we usually are and take control of our actions and responsible for our results. Thank you.

My main objective is to succeed. That may involve mistakes, or not. Whether a BA or PM, we are there to ensure the needs/requirements of the customer are met. The important thing, is what you do if and when a mistake is made.

I couldn't agree more. So in your case you seem to "fail forward". I mean, when you fail, you probably reflect, don´t act differently since your main objective is the same, and find other way toward the success of the project. Could you tell us any tip in your experience about what yo do when a mistake is made? Thank you

Thanks Anupam and Sergio. Imagine multiple reasons that might result in project failure. Let´s understand failure as not meeting project requirements.

In my experience, when failure is a huge menace not only to the company but to the project team members, we people tend to act blaming others, making excuses,…. so in that working enviroment, I´ve seen many times that our primarily objective changes from meeting project requirements to avoid making mistakes. What´s your experience? Do you (or others) continue sticked to the primary objective or change toward avoiding making mistakes? When problems are more than possible what´s your (or others, in your experience) behavior?
