My recommendation: go to the PMBOK or to an oficial PMI document named "PMI Lexicon on PM Terms"

Scope: The sum of the products, services, and results to be provided as a project.

Work: The amount of effort applied to produce a deliverable or to accomplish a task or a group of related tasks.

yes I agree with you on definition of work but if you look into SOW (statement of work) that is input to "develop project charter" you will realize that what is meant by work in SOW is not just the "effort applied" but full scope as well.

When it comes to what is required from a project, you will realize it is somehow difficult to differentiate between scope statement, SOW, procurement statement of work and statement of requirements.

I appreciate your reply, so with reply from Sergio. It is not about reference for where a terminology can be found but it is about giving chance to ourselves to "reflect" on the meanings given to us by others and to express the way how we understand it or believe on the way it is. It is a way to be away sometimes from being a prisoner of the word. It is for instigation of the discussion on the matter if you know what I mean.

Sorry, but this is the big mistake. When you embrace a profession or a science you need to go to the basic terms defined for those that have been created the profession or the science. One of the key reasons because project fails is because the ambiguity that has a hugh impact on requirements (project requirements in this case) work.

True that we should go to the basic terms of the industry but at the same time we should make our own input whenever there is room for addition to cover any shortage as we are part of the industry and not just users of it. Sungjoon said "Work" in PM understanding is more than just "effort" and I agree with him.

If it a word of work is with a big "W", it might be a different meaning from a word of work with a lower case "w". As Anupam commented above, work(lower case w) means the amount of effort to produce something. But Work with a big W is likely to have more comprehensive meaning like scope or deliverables.

Statement of Work is not necessarily inclusive of every effort to fully deliver the product but high level of product scope.

Hope it helps.
