ha,
I feel nervous to put my problemhere. I just had a 4-day module on Project Managment. It really doesn't make much sense to be. Now I am going to write an assignment about preparing a critical appraisal of some elements of project or programme theory,I amstruggling with which theory could be appraised well...

Have read all those professional comments here. Hopefully I could get some for my primary question. Thanks.

Hi Yaning,

I have a big problem with PM theory that is just that, theory that will be unused in your industry. So I would suggest that you look to write about something that is practicle for you and something you use.

Some basic theroies, like Triple Constraints, apply most everywhere. My area of expertise is construction, so I might write about procurement management and negotiating with subcontractors.

I don't know what industry you are in, but pick a subject that you can relate to in your everyday world.

I highly recommend you spend some time at www.pmi.org. The Project Management Institute started off with an effort of defining and promoting general project management practices. In the past few years they've put a LOT of effort into defining specialty practices (and you should find SIG - Specialty Industry Group most appropriate to your industry for help.)

For what its worth, a 4-day module on project management is barely enough to get your feet wet. I hope you aren't expected to be able to recommend approaches based on this exposure. You don't have to be a PMI PMP in order to be competent in this area but at the same time your employer needs to understand (and you can find material at the PMI site to help buttress the argument) that PM skills are both acquired over time and inherent in some people. Show them the material about the fact that many people take an individual class for each of the nine core disciplines of project management in order to earn a PM certificate and prepare for PMP certification. Hopefully they'll get the point that they need to allocate more resources for your project management education. Hopefully...

Good luck.
