I have been certified for 3 years now. Although I have held PM positions prior to receiving the certification, they were mostly a lead role and not using the actual PMBOK areas to run the project. Ironically, after becoming certified, I have only had 1 PM role. Where can I gain some skills to improve my ability to perform in future roles. Are there opportunities to work for free or volunteer just to get the experience Saving Changes...
Normally the various processes of PMBOK have been automated into the various Project Management software solution that a Project Management Offices use so sometimes you are going through the whole PMBOK lifecycle of a project without realising it. I would review the PMBOK processes and map it to the project management software solutions that you have used in the past. As regarding real world project management experience using PMBOK toolset I would approach this as a project in itself by using your knowledge of PMBOK and look at the various areas that you could gain experience in NGO's, public and private sector. There are several volunteering opportunities - i.e., volunteering for PMI, for example, can bring in opportunities to learn various facets of Project Management and also bring in a positive impact by networking with more members of the same boat. However, to leverage what you have attained (certification), if you do not have the right opportunities in your current organization, I would highly recommend moving to another organization which has demands for your skills and food for your thoughts.
Hope this helps. Saving Changes...
