I have been certified for 3 years now. Although I have held PM positions prior to receiving the certification, they were mostly a lead role and not using the actual PMBOK areas to run the project. Ironically, after becoming certified, I have only had 1 PM role. Where can I gain some skills to improve my ability to perform in future roles. Are there opportunities to work for free or volunteer just to get the experience

When One run just to run, One will get nowhere. Knowing which, what direction, where, or when to run toward is critical. In that I meant, knowing what One wants, which industry or field that One wants to get into is the key to invest the baby, growing steps. Continue to build the knowledge through continued education and networking are the other great practices. Most importantly is to apply and contribute. The critical components to building One's strength, character, and visibility. Best of lucks.

Before you get chance to practice on a real project, you could try to use the knowledge in you daily life to manage your time or your own tasks (in work or life) first. Or try your methods in your family. I have some practices with my daughter and shared these experience with other. Good luck!

VRMS is your best option, but how about volunteering your time in the community where you live. I am well known as busy bee helping the community and my children school in their small projects.

Multicultural associations they have a lot of need for PM volunteer base.

Introspection or looking back to the projects you handled in past and guided by PMBOK principle that you need to move your project ahead meeting all the constraints and keeping all your stakeholders supportive, you can improve your PM skills. You can analyze where you did well and where you did not do well. In future project include above and experiment, you may fail on some of your experiments but that would also get you some improvements in your PM skills.

Try if you can work with a project manager in you current organization itself.
Practical experience of handling different kind of people and scenarios are very important when you are gaining PM skills.
