It's good to set yourself apart from the competition, network, understand what you have to offer of value, and build a good brand online and offline. Lots of great info out there to research.

There should be a strong focus to improve Freelance Project Management in India. Somehow Employers are shying away from this which means they may miss out some wonderful managers to manage their projects on a need basis. It should not be a need that always Project Managers need to be full time. Hope things will change.

Have you checked out Flexjobs.com or Upwork.com? These are two sites where PMs can find freelance local and virtual jobs.

- Type of project. Basically SAP upgrades, full implementation or roll-outs.

- My role, I've started as a Team Lead, Project Coordinator, Cut Over Manager and Project Manager. My responsibilities have been increasing as my knowledge increased.

- Usually, I've worked at the client's site, but I've managed virtual teams, as ABAP Developers in India, Argentina or Brazil. Core IT Team was always on site.

- Benefits: From my point of view, most important is freedom to choose. I've worked in a BIG5 IT SAP companies and I've never been available to choose the client or the project, for example, if I led projects in the cell phone or electronic companies, I was leading during a lot of years these type of client. During my freelance experiences, I choose from beauty customer retail, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and other different business types.

Holidays or Vacations: As I freelance I always try to enjoy vacations after one Go-live, like this I'll start fresh the new one, and I can ensure you that generally is more than I month, I used it for travel or formation.

- Disadvantages, there are some big disadvantages most important are due to the periods that I'm without assigned project. First of all is no income, second sometimes there was too much free time that luckily, I try to plan it in advance for formation, congress or other project management activities.

A Few days ago, a hiring manager described me as a job-jumper, and I answered that I'm knowmad ...Buzzwords! lol (I'm working on a blog entry about it)

Some companies or countries don't understand or aren't prepared for freelance Project Managers, and ask too many questions about the periods without the project or they prefer specialization in only one kind of business.

Let me know if I can help in something else.
Where can I find such freelance positions online? I've a full-time job, but would like to dive more in IT project management.

Sites like upwork.com can assist you in finding freelance PM work, that is conveniently remote most of the time. To be successful, you need to build your experience and your brand with good recommendations and ratings.

I know someone from Canada who started with Upwork about 4 years ago. She got a few small gigs, then luckily enough got a short gig with a company in the Middle East, which expanded into full-time work. After 2 years with this company via Upwork, the company decided to pay out Upwork for the contractor. Now this lady works full-time online for this Middle East company, which just happened to expand into California a couple of years ago, which makes time zones much better.
