We have a major project starting at my company to modernize all of the programming code in our ERP system from RPG (Green Screen) to .NET or Java based code. They have already selected a project manager but they are asking me to step away from my current role and join the project in some capacity because of my knowledge of the system and also my project management experience and certification. Basically they are asking me to design my own full time role as it pertains to this project and possibly beyond. I’ve been doing some research on different roles that have been assigned in ERP implementation type projects and think that something like a project lead or project champion fits best but any descriptions of roles and responsibilities I’ve been able to find are quite vague.

I was wondering if you have had any experience with these kinds of projects and could offer your opinion on what would make up a meaningful role. It’s a weird situation because they are asking me to leave my current position of 16 years to join this project full time (minimum of 2 years) and I wouldn’t be able to go back. The choice is completely mine. I can decline if I want to just continue in my current position but I also find this opportunity interesting due to the company-wide impact the project will have, plus it’s also a change from my current routine which is less challenging than it used to be. There are also plans to introduce a 2nd and 3rd phase to the project once the 1st phase is completed in 2018-2019. This could also be a stepping stone to gain the right skills to eventually move up in the company.

Your opinions are much appreciated

My first thought is building a full fledged ERP system is a huge undertaking, not too mention the risk and maintenance factors. Was there a make/buy analysis? I understand its updating the code base. Is there also a requirements/solution review. I'm sure there would be requested changes. A rebuild would probably be easier.

That aside, That is a tricky situation, and although subsequent phases are planned, you just never know. There certainly are the positives; out of your current routine, provide a challenge, and most importantly, potentially providing opportunities for growth. And even so, the move will add to the story of your resume, with a recognition of a stagnate position with the need and desire to change, getting out of your comfort zone.

What does your gut say?

Thanks for your reply. With regard to being part of the project, yeah I think it would be a good challenge and a nice change from my daily routine. What I'm struggling with is designing my own role considering there is already a Project Manager assigned. I'm not sure what my role would look like. I would want it to be a valuable and sustainable role. Project lead or something like that but having specific responsibilities like leading test automation, risk, post-implementation support. Not really sure. I was hoping to model the role based on something I could find in similar projects, but I'm struggling to find something with any substance.
