The Project Management Institute or PMI is the world’s largest professional organization dedicated to project management. Established in 1969, PMI membership has doubled every two years since 1995.

More than $250 billion is spent each year in the United States on IT application development of approximately 175,000 projects. 31.1% of projects will be canceled before they ever get completed. 52.7% of projects will cost 189% of their original estimates. Lost opportunity costs are not measurable, but could easily be in the trillions of dollars. Since 1998, hundreds of professionals have contributed to the development of a new PMI standard called “OPM3” that will help organizations address these issues.

The Organizational Project Management Maturity Model or OPM3 is designed to guide organizations in the development of the Capabilities necessary to achieve Best Practices in Organizational Project Management or OPM. OPM is the conjunction of portfolio, program, and project management to achieve the strategies of an organization through projects.

About the presenter:
John Schlichter is a principal of OPM Experts, LLC, "the organizational project management experts," located in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. John joins us to speak about PMI's Organizational Project Management Maturity Model or OPM3, a new PMI standard resulting from the largest project of its kind in PMI's history. John was the volunteer program manager of PMI's OPM3 Program for over four and a half years, from May 1998 when the program was chartered to November 2002, when he resigned his volunteer position to launch OPM Experts, a firm that will offer supporting products and services to help organizations get the most out of the OPM3 standard once it is released later this year. John is credited with designing the underlying architecture for OPM3 and later the prototype that was adopted by the team. John led over 800 volunteers from over 20 countries in the development of the standard. John has spoken about the OPM3 standard throughout the world at various events including PMI's Seminars & Symposium's, the PMI North American and European Congresses, the IPMA's World Congresses, and many other events, most recently including a speaking tour throughout England and Italy last month.
