If you are referring to this specific PM community then here is how I started giving back:

1- I joined in 2015 as a PMI Member and started reading blogs, threads and articles and most importantly discussion threads and noticed how beneficial it was.
2- Following that, I started initiating questions on the discussion board for issues that I was having difficulties with and started receiving constructive feedback.
3- I then started participating in others discussion threads, issuing blogs and publishing articles that tackle subject that I did believe it will help out others.

I faced some challenges such as website related issues, rules & regulations and so on but I used to approach the community engagement specialists and they did help me out so much with all issues that I addressed and now when I see others having similar issues, I do help them out by addressing their concerns.

Started participating on this portal from 2015. Initially it was limited to watching webinars, reading white papers and articles. Slowly started networking with other PMs, and posted questions on different areas seeking thoughts and opinions from all over.

Later in 2016, I started actively participating in online events, discussions, contributed thoughts and ideas, shared articles, links, and information, participated in surveys, wrote reviews.

Started networking with regional chapter members, participated in in-person events, referred job postings, and showed interest in volunteering.

I don’t see any challenges as such, if there are any it can be overlooked considering the benefits.

Hello,

i am trying to giving back via participation in this community, contributing to discussions, writing blogs/articles, conducting a webinar series and providing a mindmap based and PMBoK Guide aligned pm framework.
In addition i am administrator in the worlds biggest PMP prep related LinkedIn group, cause helping PMP aspirants is one of my passions. Therefore i have conducted the "Let me be your PMP guide" - program where i helped preparing for the PMP exam more than 200 aspirants meanwhile (and counting ...).
I am also helping my colleagues in understanding PMI principles and PMBoK Guide processes and to transfer them in real life project management.
My greatest challenge is the language barrier, but i am working on it ... ;)

The biggest challenge I have is the language, both formal and "slang" (or local terminology). I constantly keep improving my language skills, but it take time to master both the grammar and speaking skills required.

LORI WILSON RETIRED - Technical Project Manager| RETIRED - LifePoint Health Clarkston, Wa, United States
I joined my local Inland Northwest PMI Chapter. During a recent Chapter meeting, I learned about Leadership Spokane and how Project Managers were involved with projects to improve their community - examples: 1. During crisis events in homes where Social Workers came to remove children, children were given black garbage bags to fill with their belongings before moving to a foster home. A project manager built a team who decorated small wheeled suitcases to exchange for the black garbage bags. 2. Another Project Manager worked with restaurants to provide food and mentoring to homeless teens. 3. A third Project Manager coordinated fundraisers for an infant crisis center. I was so inspired after hearing how Project Management volunteering in the community worked in Spokane, I have come back to my community and learned we have a Leadership Lewiston. I am in the process of applying to volunteer for 1 year of my skills and services to see what I can do to improve my community. This is a great way to give back and I hope you might be inspired as well to see if there are opportunities like this in your community!

I joined this community in attempt to become more outgoing, and share any knowledge I have gained by commenting on blogs, articles, and discussions.

Subsequently, I have attended a local chapter event and plan to discuss volunteering options.

I logged here before to get my PMP Certification, I learned a lot of, following the discussions, reading articles, after few months of shy or discrete appearance I've decided to start contributing participating in polls, discussions or sharing my opinion about the articles or blogs.

I've also participated in as a volunteer in a virtual opportunity as a Tester for a training Tool during August 2016.

I have pending my participation in my local chapter, I hope to do it soon.
