This is for more experienced PM's,

I have not yet entered the field, so I am looking for guidance. I want to make sure I have a balanced profession-to-personal ratio. Do you find that there are certain PM skills that don't necessarily help with "family situations"? Perhaps you tend to micromanage or have strict risk management with your children's lifestyle. Do you see how the PM skills have benefited your home life? I can even see potential for the reversal as well. Maybe you are at work one day and are dealing with a younger client, the same age as your child at home (20's). How does the relationship with your child at home influence how you deal with this client. Is there anything to be said about this?

I appreciate any replies

Working smart and working hard are not the same thing. Think about the story you want your resume to tell.

Re remote, well, that depends :)

What I can suggest is to never overlap both worlds (personal and professional) because some or the other day you will not be able to detach from professional world.

It happened to me. I was thinking work all the time even when with my family. The only solution was to differentiate tackling of problems of two different world differently. Never apply (or at least try to apply) same principles for both. It was initially difficult but slowly I got hold of things.

The first thing I started was to say NO to meetings those were overlapping with my family time. Similarly I started to plan work time and home time. Started to be more as a listener when with family rather than being as a manager in office where I dictated the terms. Be little silly at home and serious in office.

Hope my 2 cents are helpful to you.

Very simple, family is always first.
I feel the same way! I just find some situations I will be with my girlfriend and I may start to micro-manage. I am conscious of it, yet I still do it. I am hoping that my awareness is a process of change and I can be a great leader with this kind of thinking. It's just sometimes a worry to myself of how it will all play out.

Every "project" in your life and work should be tailored during the planning stage. You probably will do quantitative risk analysis for a 2-year project, but not when planning a wedding.

Always scale your project management to the project.
