Hello Experts,
With ongoing Internal optimisations, the roles of Project team members are being assesed.
I am trying to evolve a good Job Title / Designation for a role that involves both Business Analysis and Project Management, by one Individual.
The fact that the nature of projects, and the involvement level of Project Leads/ Senior Users, defines if the member from Project team is a BA or a PM or a Hybrid of both on any given project.
Could I request you, learned folks, to make suggestions of what this Job Title could be.
Will these team members always be both the BA and PM on the projects they work on? If an individual will always fill both roles on any given project, keep the title Project Manager. If the roles will vary from project to project, Project Analyst is as good as any title. Keep it simple.
One reason for this is that you are less likely to get experienced project managers applying for a role with a hybrid title that sounds like it is less than a project manager.

Hi Aaron,
Thank you for taking time to post a response.
The nature of projects are varied. Depending on the kind of projects, the role of the team member is defined. A BA, in our organisation, could undertake a small size project, such is the manner by which the Mentorship has worked. We engage BAs throughout the project, and provide insight into project lifecycle. The reason for this hybrid role, is to observe the performance of those project team members who have been Business Analysts and can be move up to PM roles.THis Hybrid role is an transitionary role.
I agree with your observation that there would be lack of specalisation in a hybrid role.

I would keep the title as is: Project Manager and define the BA Role in the duties and responsibilities.
I do not believe that one person can fully carry on both roles unless it was a very small project or business.

Absolutely agree with Rami.
Other considerations
- what is your primary function
- how do you want to present your story; as a BA, who can work as a PM when needed, or as a PM, who can work as a BA when needed.

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for the response.
We perform Business Process project and IT projects.
We would prefer to have a PM with BA skills to deal with Small and Medium projects.
I never seen people manage a nice balance when assuming 2 roles. 95% of the times is spend on one role, often not clear for people around.

Dear Vincent,
Thank you for the response.
We are exploring the possibility of setting up a hybrid role to deal with medium and small projects.
We haven't decided the implementation of this role. We are in a fact finding period.

I am working with business analysis practice and role/standards definition from the genesis of the role. And I am working with project management practice and role/standards defintion too (not from the genesis, I am not too old...). The first thing you must (sorry to use must) do is to clear undestand what each role is. In the begining, most of us have performed both roles (in some plays it still remains) but the roles are totally different. In brief, the hugh difference is the focus: business analysis focus is the solution that has to be created to put organizational strategy in practice while project manager focus is the work to be done to create the defined solution. Second, the scope: business analyst starts before a project exists, persists along the project, and continue after the project ends.

Dear Sergio,
Thanks for taking time to send a detailed reply.
This role is being defined currently. Once we have a clear understanding of the positives/negatives a decision has to be made.
Thanking you,
