I am the member of management team in our organization that composes of four people: operation, development, maintenance and sales/marketing and we all communicate to our general manager who is living far and just visit us quarterly. I am in the development and all the time i work as project manager when there is new project to develop. To make this shorter, i'm doing my role in the management and at the same time i'm leading a team of developers. Could this be a healthy idea? Should i be just focus on the development team doing project management? And just have one person to be responsible in the administration? Any ideas? Saving Changes...
sure, change your hats. One is for management one is for development. I think its a dependent of the projects size. If a large one, this will take full time and that reduces time for management. Better call a project team member for managing the project. Saving Changes...
Don't feel lonely in your situation. Many folk find themselved managing projects while holding down legacy roles. It is even more prevalent at program/porfolio management level. Above all, it is do-able -if occasionally uncomfortable.
My advice is:
(1) Apply project management systematically to your project task, and make this application very visible. (2) Have other stakeholders buy in to the project management approach. (3) Assess the time required for you to do the project role and ensure that this is visible factored into your workload. In other words ensure that there is recognition for the amount of time that the project will take you away from the main job. Do contact me if you would like to discuss this further.
