Oooh, one of my pet peeves!
In my book, project management is a methodology for managing projects. IT has its own set of methodologies, construction has its own set of methodologies, product development has its methodologies. The PM methodology is not in conflict with any of those other methodologies, it is very much a compliment to them.
I've seen many versions of project management for a specific business but when you pull back the covers is still comes down to pure Initiation/Planning/Execution/Controlling/Closing. Don't get me wrong, I do believe that there are effeciencies when you have a project manager that has experience in a specific business methodology but when I look to hire project managers I attempt to gauge their PM skills first and then understand their business knowledge.
I've worked as a project manager in IT, Aerospace Research, and Heavy Construction. The names may change, but the activities and skills needed are basically same.
Project Mangers having an understanding of the processes as described in PMBOK, and the right mix of communication skills with "think-on-your-feet" intuition, are successful. Saving Changes...
Yes, I agree with Bob and Todd. I've managed projects in IT and construction. Recently, I became a project manager at a bank. While I'm am in a heavy learning curve about the banking industry, the project management skills I use are no different than the ones I used previously in IT and construction. Saving Changes...
