I'm presently looking into furthering my education in Project Management. I have four years of PM experience but have never taken courses or classes to enhance my knowledge in PM. What advice would you all suggest for someone in my situation - I'm presently looking for employment but many times they require a certified PM or 5+ years of experience?
I will recommend PMP certification, as you already have four years of PM experience.

7,500 hours leading and directing projects
35 hours of project management education

I personally do recommend that you take a PMP course and sit for the PMP exam if you qualify. If not, then you can apply for CAPM. You will extremely benefit from both.

I will differ from my friends, No doubt getting certified got a lot of benefits. If you are meeting the criteria then getting certified is not a big deal. By getting training you can easily secure PMP certification. But you can't get whole knowledge by few hours training. Even you have been practicing project management for years but there are for sure, certain areas which you haven't explored to that extent. So I always prefer to study in details, to understand the knowledge so that it get helpful to apply it accordingly. I would recommend attend some PMP readiness training which is essential to secure required PDUs. After having training, perform fair GAP analysis and if you feel that there are really certain areas which required more detailed exploration then you must register yourself with some school/universities to study it in detail. Its all about you, whats important to you certification or better understanding of Project Management Framework.

In spanish language we use two words: Conocimiento and Saber. The first one is what you get by study about a topic. The second one is the ability to apply the Conocimento in the practice. So, what you are searching for? Conocimiento or Saber. If you are searching for Saber then you have to be involved into projects no matter the activity you perform inside it. If you are searching for Conocimiento then read and understand the PMBOK or PRINCE2. If you have opprotunity to be involved in courses go ahead but if and only if those courses practical instead of theorical.

Hi Damian,
Great advice so far.
I see the two as separate. It sounds as if you are running into a gap by not having your PMP. I would absolutely you go for that, either with self study, or a prep course. The prep course will prepare you for the exam, not teach you about Project Management. Based on your described experience, you should have no problem qualifying.
Once you are a certified PMP, you can then focus your efforts on taking actual classes through a local College or University. I'm not to familiar with what types of classes are offered, but I have heard members here speak of a Masters with Project Management.

I recommand also you to try PMP certification. To have THE certification will give your also the project management vocabulary, and help you to work with "real" PMs :-)
