Much as I would love to describe the job I have been doing for the past 14 years as a profession, I would suggest that Project Management is more a general management discipline and a toolset for "getting the job done".

In my mind the problem with the project management profession is that it has outgrown its certification process. PMI is the 'standard' for employers, and it is a good demonstration that someone has the fundamental skills, but it doesn't begin to address the application of those skills and in this day and age project management is art not science - I know the notes for a number of songs, but that doesn't mean that anyone would pay to hear me sing them!!! Additionally, project management is now far more than a generic skillset applied well, the skills needed for project management in software development are very different from medical research, or construction, etc. Can you tell that this topic hits a nerve :-) Saving Changes...
