Both are important for progressing, it is a combination of experience and qualifications.

Qualification (I will say skills) you keep on adding as you progress, experience comes over time. To progress vertically, blend of both are required.

Qualification, you can't have qualification without experience.
Or I don't have the same meaning

Vincent,

Thanks for your view.

Qualification can provide a view into the principle or train a person on principle, whilst actual work gives us the practice and practical application of the knowledge. Many a times, the princple may be the same, but the application is an inferred concept of the principle, without diluting the objective of the principle.

The query related to a situation where a employee over a period of time, grows within an organisation purely based on experience and working knowledge, but not necessarily builds up on formal qualifications. Many a time, the experience may be more suitable, than someone who may come in to do the same job with just qualifications.

There are qualifications that are solely based on knowledge. Most Oracle, Microsoft and Cisco certifications tend to be of that nature.

The problem with experience is that it can be difficult to measure. You have to identify the skills, then evaluate the individual's proficiency.
