James Don IT Assurance and Delivery| Academic Researcher & Consultant United Kingdom
Hi All, am doing doctoral research looking into challenges and failures in IT projects. Please support my research by answering a few survey questions. The survey should take about ten to twelve minutes to complete.

The survey focuses on solving the challenges and difficulties associated with IT projects, understanding the obstacles encountered, and providing a way to guarantee the delivery and assurance of IT projects. I would like you to tap into your insights and experiences on this topic.

The hope is that this study will offer an immense contribution to the existing body of knowledge with the Project Management and technology domain.

Participants who complete the study will also have the opportunity to enter a draw to win 1 of 20 £50 Amazon vouchers.

Please do get in touch if you have any questions or feel free to forward this survey to your network. Thanks for your interest and time.

Hi Mesh -

I completed the survey. Good for you for taking this on as part of your Doctorate work. As a senior consultant who specializes in rescue work of troubled initiatives, I have my own observations for why the success % over the years has not materially improved.

If you haven't done so already, I'd recommend Cutter Consortium [https://www.cutter.com] as a place for historical trends related to project success (or failure).

Also a read of Ed Yourdan's "Death March" is very worthwhile exercise.

Much luck!

- Cris

Thanks Cris, much appreciated!

Yes I have heard of Cutter and already reviewed it as part of my research process.

Will you be willing to share more about your experiences of rescuing failed projects? This is will be very beneficial. I'll drop you a message.

Hi Mesh, I appreciate the task you have taken on. We will all benefit from your research. I had a question regarding factors unrelated to the project per se yet connected; will you consider influencing factors in your research which impact project success such as subcontracts, contract management, and completion criteria. I am the contracts negotiator on a R&D development contract for the benefit of the Government which is heavily invested in IT at the hundreds of millions U.S.D. I think I can speak to the customer expectations portion of the project and what we did to set proper expectation with the customer. However I am not directly involved with the PM portion. Are you interested in comments from a non-PM or are you specifically focused on the PM discipline in your research?

Hi Michael,
Yes indeed, the research is covering all aspects and factors that influence IT projects such as political, social, third-party factors including the ones you mentioned e.g. subcontracts, contract management, and completion criteria.

So yes, I'd be interested in your experiences and view on the ares of contract management, completion criteria and related factors that influence project outcomes.
