Sometimes the things we take for granted and do by our "second nature", are the same things that we fail at. Examples: Birthdays and anniversary dates... effective listening... or running truly effective meetings.

What are some of the tricks and tips that you've used to improve the caliber of meetings that you conduct?

1. Agendas...distributed to the meeting participants as far in advance as possible. These agendas address what will be discussed, and more importantly, what the GOAL of the meeting is. I honestly think the problem with so many meetings running over their allotted time is no one knows when they've reached the end! Most meeting participants appreciate that you've actually taken the time to think of them and that goes a long way in building trust and respect instead of having some unorganized "on the fly" meeting.

I agree that most of this seems like second nature and to a lot of people, it is. To me it's common sense to let people know why you need to speak with them before you actually come together. For others, not so much.
