How did you begin your project management career? What was your very first project?

Thought it would be interesting to see how everyone started their career in project management. I started out in a technical service role that led to interaction with engineering. After some time it evolved into a project management role. My very first projects were short duration. They involved determining ways to modify catalog products to meet unique application needs.

I have a Civil Engineering Degree majoring in Structures. I worked in Design for couple of years before I shifted into on-site project management working on Oil & Gas Projects then Residential, Commercial and I honestly enjoyed and still do enjoy Project Management much more than design as every project is unique and challenging.

Wendy -

Great question.

My first 'formal' project was in high school (40+ years ago). I co-managed Lodging and Transportation for about 1,000 participants in a 3-day congress of Connecticut student councils. This involved recruiting and coordinating host families and making sure delegates were properly accommodated.

Prior to that I was lucky enough to participate in creating live video productions while in elementary school. They were live because back then (mid-1960's), video recording required very expensive equipment. That experience is where I learned the basics behind requirements, critical paths, deliverables and resource management.

Those are the two primary motivators that led to careers in marcom, software development and eventually 30 years of independent project/program management.

Kindest regards,

- Cris

I started off in Technical Support and Software Development roles soon after my Master's Degree in IT . I then evolved into a Technical Leadership role where I managed the entire technical streams of projects, especially where the organization purchased Commercial off the shelf products. Transition to Project Management was a lot easier after that.

I also started in a technical environment and over time, I have already participated in different projects as an element of the project management team. Spent some time investing in personal training (CAPM) and at the moment I am looking for new opportunities in project management teams.

I was managing projects before I had ever heard of PMI. It was a real eye opener to study project management as a discipline, and I like to think I've gotten much better at it. I've met others in the same boat; they get promoted to a project manager position within their organizations but have no project management training.

On the flip side, I regularly find people online who are trying to get their PMP but have never managed even one project.
