Social Media is increasingly present in our projects.

When we create a project plan, we can incorporate into the communications plan the use of certain social platforms to communicate with our team.

As far as I understand, the communication management plan and the stakeholder management, are quite linked, but the first makes use of which tools we will use, and the second in why.

Engaging stakeholders and avoiding turnovers within our team, can be managed or improved by using different social media platforms, but ... Where we should include social media, in communication plan or stakeholder management plan?

Are you using social media to engage your stakeholders during the project? Share your experience.

Social media became one of the most important tool to communicate the unofficial messages and even the official ones.I'm using social media to communicate with different stakeholders. For example we are using Whatsapp to communicate with the team members and using Twitter to send a messages to the community and end users when we are dealing with public.
But till now we never think to add social media in our communication plan

Thank you, Mohamed, Whatsapp is a powerful app, that allows creating team groups and manages communications. Here in the USA is not common. But, I've remembered during an IT Go-Live project that we've agreed to use it and included in our communications plan.

It is a matter of choice/selection to make extensive or preferential use of Social media as Plan Stakeholders management and /or Communication Plan.Social media is rapidly being widely accepted and preferred by the larger spectrum of Stakeholders. However, with regard to Project stakeholders I would prefer to use it inside of the Organization i.e.Contractor,sub-contractors,vendors,suppliers etc.directly involved on a particular project.Outside the Organization,it would be preferable to restrict use of social media as part of communication plan to deal with the Employer,Project management consultants, and other agencies supporting/assisting the Employer for whom regular official communication channels under the project communication protocol should be ideally used as two way communication between Employer and Contractor.

Hi Maria,

I have been using the discussion board in my SharePoint Project Site. We use Outlook of course, but I specify the primary medium will be the discussion board to ensure all project related threads remain and are linked to the project. I configure alerts according the audience, real-time or daily summary.

I also use Harmon.ie in outlook and upload any pertinent emails (or documents) to a corresponding folder in the project site's document library.

All project artifacts are in the project site's document library. This avoids having multiple versions of a single document floating around in other's inbox's.

I sync my project plan with my project site's task list and socialize it from the site, with regards to Stakeholders and the internal project team.

Sorry, got a bit off on a tangent .... :) I never would have though SP would be considered Social Media, but seems in that regard, it can be.

Thank you Andrew, Yeah, after reading few articles, I've realized that SharePoint is considered as Social Media. As you know I'm a fan of SharePoint, and during my last project was key to manage communications.

But, are you using the discussion board to engage the team? Or only for communication proposals?

I use for engagement. It works very well. I'm a big proponent on socializing and centralizing as much as possible. The discussion is available for any on the team to chime in if they have valuable information to include.

To communicate with the team most company have internal tools like documents management systems, email and other, those should be use.
To communicate with stakeholder that are not precisely identify Social Media is a good communication tool, I would not use it to communicate with the team unless it is for public viewing.
To communicate with stakeholder (like general population) we where using interview with regular media, but social media is also a good solution.

maybe we should start Twitting project information on a regular basis! ha! ha!

Vincent, thank you for your comments.

I can't imagine about twitting the last status meeting using a hashtag #allrednogoodnews hahaha but for example years ago I've used a hashtag in tweeter to engage team members to join the social activities promoted by the PMO.

I think that this depend on the company's culture and the stakeholders customer.

sometimes the culture encourage this kind of communication and sometimes it prohibits it but my believe that in the next 5 years it will be incorporated in all corporations if it is not already in most of them.

until today some of the top executives in big companies prefer the regular communication channels and this requires you to push them toward the new ways but at the same time provide them with the other option of regular communication so that they can accomodate
